In 1882, Richard F. Jardine, Edmund, Brigham, and John Ellsworth and their families founded Lewisville, naming it in honor of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and it became one of the first settlements in the Snake River Valley. They cleared sagebrush, dug canals, fought mosquitoes, and built humble homes, while a log room served for church, school, and recreation. A branch of the L.D.S. Church was established in 1883, and a ward was organized on Aug. 17, 1884, with Richard F. Jardine as bishop, Don C. Walker as Sunday School superintendent, Charles Shurtliff as the first school teacher, and Olive Goody as the first postmistress.
