Execution Rocks Light rises from a small artificial island in Long Island Sound on the border of New Rochelle and Sands Point, New York, marking dangerous surrounding rocks with a flashing white light. Congress funded it in 1847, Alexander Parris designed it, it was built in 1848 and 1849, and first lit in 1850. The granite tower is an early example of wave-swept lighthouse engineering, later improved with a Fresnel lens, keeper’s quarters, and a fog signal. Its ominous name has several disputed origins, but likely derives from shipwreck hazards noted as early as 1766. After fire damage, automation, and preservation efforts, it remains protected and active for navigation.
