Sands Point Light, built in 1809 on Long Island’s North Shore, guided vessels between Long Island Sound and the East River and was the fourth lighthouse established on Long Island. Sometimes called the Mitchell Lighthouse, it grew from an effort begun in 1806 and was completed by Revolutionary War veteran Noah Mason, who served as its first keeper until 1841. The light and station evolved through upgrades and repairs, surviving war, changing technology, and repeated threats from erosion and storms. Deactivated for the last time in 1922, it later passed through prominent private owners, but the original tower and keeper’s house remain preserved, with navigation now handled offshore.
