Shipyard No. 3 was one of many industrial complexes that supported America in World War II. More than 90,000 skilled and unskilled workers from across the country relocated to Richmond, California, to find work in the shipyards. To maintain safe and efficient twenty-four-hours-a-day production, many workers received around-the-clock food service, child care, and health services. The shipyard came to represent the nationwide home front effort, which for the first time on a large scale included the work of women and people of color, as well as the crucial contributions of Richmond, California.
