W. H. Ford Male & Female College operated from 1889 to 1906 as a high-school-level institution, like many early Texas colleges, and was founded for the public good by private donors. It was named for the Secretary of the Southwest College Company, and President Joseph Syler and his wife were the teachers. After the college closed, this heart pine building was part of the Newton schools for two years, then was moved to Courthouse Square.
