The earliest landmark at Pecos began in 1881 with the burial of men engaged in the hazardous work of building the Texas & Pacific Railroad. It was used for more than 30 years by settlers in the Pecos Valley. The first markers, made of native red stone or wood, were eventually lost or worn away in sandstorms and floods.
