The original Pricketts Fort was built in 1774 during Lord Dunmore's War on the land of Jacob Prickett. It protected more than eighty neighboring families from Native American attacks. Although the fort was never attacked, many daring adventures took place there. The original fort was dismantled around 1799. A reconstruction was completed in 1976 for the American Bicentennial Celebration. Just south stands the Job Prickett House, built in 1858, and at the park entrance is one of the oldest cemeteries in Marion County.
