In 1960-61, four young college students initiated protests in Greensboro, NC, when after buying items in F.W. Woolworth's store, they sat down at the segregated lunch counter and were refused service. Sit-ins spread across the South involving high school and college students as non-violent civil disobedience continued. Dr. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) supported these protests. "True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice."
