Engine 2713 was powered by coal-fired steam, with water heated in the boiler until it became steam and expanded to drive pistons and a crankshaft that turned the engine. Its controls and equipment included stoker jets that used steam to blow coal from an auger into different parts of the firebox, a stoker control valve for the auger, overfire air injection to improve combustion, a blow down valve to remove water and impurities from the boiler, feed water injectors and controls for adding water to the pressurized boiler, a cab heater valve, a blower in the smokebox to create draft through the fire and boiler tubes, steam controls for accessories, an air compressor for brakes and sanders, cylinder cocks to expel condensed water when the engine began to move, a dynamo for electrical power, a hydrostatic oiler, water level gauges, a brake pressure gauge, throttle and brake controls, a power reverser, an automatic bell ringer valve, sand valves, and whistle levers. The fireman and engineer operated the locomotive as a team: the fireman managed the coal fire to meet changing power demands without wasting coal and water, while the engineer handled the complex boiler and the train’s mechanical operation, speed, safe movement, route knowledge, and on-time arrival.
