Immokalee's first Baptist congregation was organized as a mission in the fall of 1916 by Reverend A.M. Bennett and Reverend Peelman with seven charter members, including Robert Roberts and his wife, Sarah, from the Roberts family, one of four families in the congregation. The congregation met in an old schoolhouse until 1928, when the church was built for $616 on five acres of land provided by the First Baptist Church of Fort Myers. Sunday School rooms were added in the following years. The building was moved to a new site in 1944 and served as a sanctuary until 1952, when a new church was built. Robert Roberts played a significant role in organizing and building the church, was selected as a church deacon in 1927, and remained active in the church with his wife and family for the rest of his life.
