The forty-one foot utility boat was the Coast Guard's standard multipurpose near-shore workhorse for thirty-six years. One hundred seventy-two were built by the Coast Guard Yard in Curtis Bay, Maryland, between 1972 and 1978, and they served at almost every Small Boat Station in the country, including Station Grand Haven. Originally painted white with the signature diagonal racing stripe, many hulls were later stripped of paint to match newer bare-hull boats that saved weight and reduced maintenance. Dedicated on Armed Forces Day 2012, this forty-one UTB replaced an aging thirty-six foot Motor Life Boat with a wooden-hulled design dating to 1929. Donated to the city through private community funding and maintained by volunteers from the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Association, it stands as a memorial to the men and women of the Coast Guard, their service to the country, and their bond with Grand Haven, known as Coast Guard City U.S.A. Over the years, Grand Haven hosted numerous Coast Guard offices, including cutters such as the ESCANABA and shore-based units including the Small Boat Station, Group Office, Sector Field Office, World War Two Training Camp, and the District Headquarters.
