Indian women used grinding rocks like these with a linear rock called a pestle to grind grass seeds, acorns, and other foods during meal preparation, which also included gathering, storing, leaching, and cooking. It is believed that each hole here served as many as 3 people, and the six holes suggest that this encampment may have contained 18 people in total. Acorns, grass seeds, and roots provided a diet rich in starch and fat. Local immigrants nicknamed these Indians the “Digger Indians.”
