Rattlesnake Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in western Montana, in Lolo National Forest about 4 miles north of Missoula. Created by Congress in 1980 as part of the larger Rattlesnake National Recreation Area, it protects much of the high country of the Rattlesnake Mountains. Managed under the 1964 Wilderness Act, it remains largely undeveloped, with no roads or buildings and no logging or mining. Motorized and mechanized travel is generally prohibited, so bicycles stop at the boundary, while permitted camping and fishing are allowed and hunting is allowed in season.
