Across Lake Marburg on the northern horizon lie the Pigeon Hills, once inhabited by thousands of passenger pigeons. From earliest pioneer days until the 1880s, this migratory bird flocked to these hills and was once so plentiful that its numbers darkened the skies, but it is now extinct.
