Esther Martinez served her community as an educator, linguist, and storyteller. Her foremost contributions to New Mexico were documenting and preserving the Tewa language and the art of storytelling. In 2006, the National Endowment for the Arts named her a National Heritage Fellow, the nation's highest honor for artists.
