Summer Lake Hot Springs, at the south end of Summer Lake in south-central Oregon, is a cluster of artesian mineral springs geothermally heated near the base of a mountain rim. Long used by Native Americans as Medicine Springs, the area also preserves evidence of very early occupation, thousands of artifacts, and fossil remains of extinct Pleistocene animals. After Captain John C. Fremont passed nearby in 1843 and Summer Lake received its present name, settlers later developed the site, first as Woodward Hot Springs and then as a commercial resort. Its historic core is a 1928 bathhouse, and the property remains a retreat tied to the valley’s geology and deep human history.
