Gearhart Mountain Wilderness is a protected landscape in south-central Oregon within the Fremont–Winema National Forest, covering 22,823 acres in the Bly Ranger District. First set aside in 1943 as a Wild Area, it gained formal wilderness status under the Wilderness Act of 1964, and an addition in 1984 brought it to its present size. Centered on 8,364-foot Gearhart Mountain, the region spans a transition between desert country and wetter western forests. Its meadows, cirques, glacial valleys, cliffs, ridges, forests, streams, and wildlife make it a notable natural area, with broad summit views and trails that support hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, and wildlife watching.
