The first post in the Indiana area was built nearby in 1717 by French Canada to counter British expansion in the valleys of the Wabash and Ohio rivers. It served as a trade and communication post. The French surrendered the fort to the British in 1761 during the French and Indian War. Native Americans occupied the fort after 1763, and American soldiers destroyed it in 1791.
