The Algonquin Mill, named for an Indian camp site near the settlement now known as Petersburg, was built about 1826 to replace an earlier mill. Originally operated by water power from Little McQuire Creek, it drove two sets of burrs. In 1880, it was converted to stem. At its peak, it produced 25 barrels in 24 hours, grinding wheat, oats, corn and buckwheat. It remained in continuous operation until 1938.
