Jefferson Davis served as President of the Confederate States of America in 1861. The sacrifices of the people of the South were presented as exemplified by him. Local Confederate units named were the Appling Grays, Company I, 27th Georgia Infantry; Appling Rangers, Company F, 17th Georgia Infantry; Appling Volunteers, Company B, 51st Georgia Infantry; Satilla Rifles, Company K, 54th Georgia Infantry; Captain. Ben Milikin's Militia, Company F, 1st Symon's Reserves; Company K, Clinch's 4th Georgia Cavalry; and Capt. Silas Crosby's Militia. Other positions associated with him were U.S. Secretary of War, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Congressman.
