The Atkinson Farm stood at this location when McClure Road ran approximately 500 feet north of here, giving the property ready access to a main road rather than leaving it isolated deep in the fields as it is today. The Atkinson family consisted of four people: the father, Wirtz, his wife, and two boys, David and James. David was killed at Shiloh, and James was not considered capable or responsible; on one occasion, he burned one of the barns to get rid of a rooster that awakened him by crowing, but the rooster escaped the fire. Neighbors then joined in a community effort to build a new barn. After these neighbors and friends retired, the McClure brothers, James and John, bought the farm in 1873. About 1916, at John McClure’s request, Mr. Henry Strauzer tore down the buildings because they had become dangerous.
