This 963-acre protected open space in coastal Connecticut spans Old Saybrook, Essex, and Westbrook and is jointly owned by the State of Connecticut, the Town of Old Saybrook, and the Essex Land Trust. Once identified as the largest remaining unprotected coastal forest between Boston and New York, the land was secured in 2015 after an agreement to purchase it was reached in 2013. The preserve contains mature coastal forest, wetlands, and vernal pools, supports a diverse animal population, and helps protect the water quality of Trout Brook and the Oyster and Mud rivers. About 10 miles of trails also make it a public recreation area.
