Tallowbox Mountain, a 4,980-foot summit in Jackson County in southwestern Oregon, is an upland of the Applegate country known today as a viewpoint and the destination of the 4.2-mile Tallowbox Trail, opened to the public in 2024 by the Applegate-Siskiyou Alliance. Its name dates to the 1880s and, by local tradition, recalls settlers storing venison tallow in a tallowbox. A fire lookout built on the summit in 1918 watched for smoke and wildfire in surrounding forests for decades until vandals burned it in 2007. A four-way camera later replaced it, linking the mountain’s history of settlement, forest protection, and recreation.
