Built in 1917 over the Applegate River in southern Oregon on land donated by stage station operator Adelbert “Deb” McKee, McKee Bridge carried the road between the Blue Ledge Copper Mine and Jacksonville and served a nearby ore-hauler rest stop with relief horses. Until 1956, it handled mining and logging traffic through the Applegate Valley. After road service ended, local residents helped preserve it, and it is now maintained as a pedestrian crossing. At 45 feet high, it is identified as the highest of Jackson County’s four remaining covered bridges, as well as the county’s oldest and longest surviving example. Major rehabilitation allowed it to reopen in June 2015.
