In Weaverville’s Reems Creek Valley, the former Vance farm preserves the birthplace of Zebulon Baird Vance and interprets early 1800s life in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Originally a mountain plantation owned by David Vance II and Mira Margaret Baird Vance, the property includes working farm structures such as a loom house, tool shed, spring house, smoke house, and corn crib, as well as a 1790 slave house and a reconstructed 1790s Vance home. It also examines the lives of the eighteen enslaved people on the farm and places Vance’s later career as North Carolina governor and U.S. senator within the broader history of the plantation and its people.
