Along the Great River Road and the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byways, where the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois rivers meet, visitors encounter history, river cultures, natural areas, wildlife, agriculture, and opportunities for recreation and relaxation, including hiking, biking, bird watching, fishing, and boating. The National Great Rivers Museum explores the relationship between humans and the Mississippi River through interactive exhibits, displays, and an aquarium. The Chain of Rocks Bridge, built in 1929, is one of the world's longest bicycle and pedestrian bridges, a vital link in the Illinois and Missouri bike trail system, the St. Louis Riverfront Trail, and the MCT Confluence Trail in Illinois, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The route also connects travelers with centuries of history, from one of North America's largest and most sophisticated prehistoric civilizations to the nation's most famous debates.
