Bowles House in Westminster, Colorado, began as an eighteen seventy-one homestead established by Edward Bruce Bowles and Mahala Elizabeth Longan soon after their marriage. Rebuilt entirely in brick in eighteen seventy-six, it became an unusually elaborate rural Italianate residence, featuring rounded windows, decorative brackets, rooftop cresting, bargeboards, and a prominent front porch. The house is closely associated with Bowles, one of the area’s earliest settlers, who arrived from Missouri in Colorado Territory at age seventeen and later helped bring the Colorado and Southern Railroad to the Westminster area. Recognized for both its architecture and its importance to local settlement history, the property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen eighty-eight.
