Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge in Arvada, Colorado, sits on the suburban edge of the Denver metropolitan area and is the smallest urban unit in the National Wildlife Refuge System at 72.2 acres. Its 63.2 acres of uplands, 9.0 acres of wetlands, and three small ponds preserve wildlife habitat and distinctive high prairie plants despite the surrounding urban setting. Local residents and supporters saved the site from development in 1990 and later organized as the Two Ponds Preservation Foundation. Formally established as a national wildlife refuge in 1992, it remains a protected natural area used for hiking, guided tours, and educational visits.
