Light columns flanked the main entrance steps of Houston High School, built in 1927, and were among the finest examples of school light columns in the state, an uncommon feature on public buildings in small communities. Architect James M. Spain's original rendering called for cast bronze or iron columns, but the completed columns were cast concrete with an outside sand-cast shell for detailing. Lion heads with open mouths decorated all four sides of each column, and art deco-type recessed squares and bands created shadow relief. After the school building burned in 1973, the columns were moved to the local National Guard armory, where they remained until their restoration in 2004. They were then coated to duplicate their original luster and character, installed on brick piers with precast concrete caps and corners, fitted with large round globes matching the architect's original rendering, and illuminated by light-emitting diode lamps powered by a solar collector and battery system.
