Formed in 1987 when Joe Lee Huffman, Willie Gene Huffman, and Robert Eaton got together to play music and share supper, the Sparta Opry grew from backyard and welding-shed Friday night shows into a community institution in a town of fewer than 200 people. Joined early by Walter “Buddy” Eaton and Jamie Myers, the musicians performed country, bluegrass, gospel, and blues, first as regular supper shows and later in a permanent building funded by volunteers. The operation remained free to attend and was sustained by board member dues, food sales, donations, and entirely volunteer labor, with a no-alcohol policy that kept it family-friendly and all-ages. Neighbors brought covered dishes, volunteers served food on site, and fundraising events to help local people in need, especially senior citizens, became regular activities. Over the decades, with only one Friday night show missed because of an ice storm, it became a beloved destination for Chickasaw County and the surrounding region, featuring house bands including the Back Porch Pickers and the Drifters and regular performers such as Britton “Spooky” Cole, Mack Banks, and Joe Rickman.
