Rancho de San Luis Gonzaga was granted by the Mexican government to Jose, Maria, Mejia and Juan Perez Pacheco on November 4, 1843, and the grant was signed by Manuel Micheltorena, Mexican governor of the Californias. It contained eleven square leagues of land, and in 1852, when the Pacheco family filed a claim with the United States for title, it was located in Mariposa County. A patent was issued to the heirs of the Pachecos on May 16, 1871, signed by U.S. Grant as President of the United States. The age of the adobe building on the site was not recorded, but available information estimated it to be more than 105 years old in 1931.
