Hampson Archeological Museum State Park in northeastern Arkansas preserves artifacts from the nearby Nodena site, a palisaded Native American village occupied along the Mississippi River from about 1400 to 1650 CE. Named for local landowner and archaeologist James K. Hampson, the museum grew from his excavations beginning in the 1920s and from efforts to preserve the collection. Its exhibits interpret Nodena community life through farming, hunting, religion, politics, and social customs. The site was later recognized as a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum also holds fossilized mastodon bones Hampson documented nearby in 1900.
