San Francisco’s Cable Car Museum in Nob Hill is devoted to the city’s cable car system and uniquely combines historical exhibits with direct views into the working machinery that still powers the lines. Established in 1974 and operated by the Friends of the Cable Car Museum, it preserves notable vehicles including Sutter Street Railway grip car 46 and trailer 54 from the 1870s, as well as Clay Street Hill Railroad grip car 8, the only surviving car from the first cable car company. As part of the larger power house and depot complex, it offers an unusually immediate look at how this living historic transit network operates beneath the streets.
