Founded in 1935, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art became the first West Coast museum devoted entirely to 20th-century art and grew into a leading center for modern and contemporary art. Under founding director Grace L. McCann Morley, it built an important permanent collection through major gifts and pioneered photography, architecture exhibitions, film screenings, and new approaches to museum practice. Its holdings later expanded through major donations and acquisitions, especially in American Pop art and photography. After moving to its current home in 1995 and expanding dramatically in 2016, it became one of the world’s largest museums focused on modern and contemporary art.
