By the early 1900s, tennis had become a bona-fide sport whose popularity at the Olympic Games made it a favorite of the country club set, and the Congdon estate therefore included a court. In keeping with the estate’s Northern aesthetics, the courtside benches were made of rough wood and the court was not fully fenced, giving it a wilder, more natural feel. Just above the tennis area stood the bowling green. Lawn bowling, a game akin to Bocce Ball, was still a relatively new pastime when Glensheen was built, and the Congdons, as early adopters, installed the green to entertain their fleeting summer guests. The recreation area was placed here for its relative quiet away from the loud waves of Lake Superior, and London Road was then scarcely traveled.
