Delaware and Lehigh National and State Heritage Corridor brings together the people, places, and events that helped shape the nation across five Pennsylvania counties. More than 150 miles long, its spine is formed by canals and railroads left from northeastern Pennsylvania’s prosperous coal age. The corridor connects the histories of lumberjacks, coal miners, lock tenders, canalers, and railroaders with canal paths, bike trails, and the waters of the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers. In its northern reach, Luzerne County offers coal towns, cities marked by ethnic diversity, and arts and educational institutions. Carbon County combines dramatic scenery with traces of the coal and lumber industries, along with towns, a coal museum, and an underground mine. The Lehigh Valley features rolling hills, winding rivers, farms, covered bridges, Victorian townhouses, Moravian heritage in the valley’s oldest city, and the history of steel and cement industries, as well as major festivals. Farther south along the Delaware River Scenic Drive, Bucks County includes pastoral views, landmarks from the struggle for independence, and a noted artist’s community among Colonial farmsteads. Across the corridor, historic landmarks, industrial remains, river trails, and preserved landscapes reflect anthracite coal, immigration, early industry, outdoor recreation, and efforts to protect exceptional vistas while supporting appropriate development.
