Built prior to 1860, the Olson-Slaabakken Cabin was the home of Norwegian settlers in Belmont Twp. north of Jackson who endured the Indian massacre of Aug. 24, 1862. In that attack, Sioux raiders killed 13 pioneers and wounded three others, including Anders E. Olson Slaabakken, father of Emmet Olson, who was shot and knifed but survived. The Belmont Massacre was part of the Great Sioux Uprising, in which over 800 whites were killed in the Midwest within a week.
