Hermit Canyon is a short side canyon in the western Grand Canyon that descends about 6 miles from the South Rim to the Colorado River. Near its upper end are Hermit Basin, Dripping Springs, and the Dripping Springs Trail, while the Hermit Trail runs down the canyon’s east side to meet the Tonto Trail at Cope Butte. At the bottom, Hermit Creek enters the river at Hermit Rapids. The canyon was named for Louis D. Boucher, the “hermit” associated with this area and with historic Hermit Camp near the river, linking the landscape’s distinct topography with an early tradition of travel and stopping places in the Grand Canyon.
