Hermits Rest, built in 1914 at the western end of Hermit Road on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, served as a stopping place for coach travelers heading toward Hermit Camp and stands at the westernmost point on the rim reachable by paved road. Named for prospector Louis Boucher, who claimed land below this point around 1891, it is also tied to the Hermit Trail he helped create. Designed by Mary Colter for the Fred Harvey Company, the building was crafted to resemble a weathered natural outcrop. It remains a notable example of Colter’s canyon architecture and was included in a National Historic Landmark designation in 1987.
