Big Hill Pond State Park in southwestern McNairy County, Tennessee, spans 4,138 acres of largely forested timberland, hardwood bottomland, wetlands, and floodplain shaped by Cypress Creek and the Tuscumbia River. Its center is 35-acre Travis McNatt Lake, while the park’s name comes from Big Hill Pond, a man-made pond created in 1853 from a borrow pit dug for levee construction along the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. The area later became a notable natural landscape with cypress stands, oxbow lakes, sloughs, and wildlife habitat. It also preserves the Big Hill Pond Fortification, where Union defenses overlooked the railroad during the Civil War.
