Along the Hatchie River, Confederate and Union forces fought a short but brutal battle after the Confederates, repulsed with devastating losses in an unsuccessful attempt to retake Corinth, found their retreat blocked when Union troops from Bolivar, Tennessee, contested their crossing of Davis Bridge. Federal troops charged across the bridge but became bottled up in a dense thicket as Southern artillery and musketry blasted the river bend, causing heavy casualties. The Federals eventually seized the heights dominating the bend, and the fighting then ceased. Having succeeded in delaying the enemy, the Confederates escaped south into Mississippi by another road. As darkness fell, exhausted Union troops tended to the wounded and buried the dead in another bitter action in the bloody campaign for control of the Mississippi Valley.
