Founded in 1812 by Russians from Sitka, Fort Ross was later sold with its improvements and supplies to Captain Sutter when the Russians withdrew to Alaska in 1841. The State acquired it in 1906, and the remaining buildings were restored, including the Greek Orthodox Chapel, Commandants Quarters, and Stockade.
