Russians built California's first windmill at Fort Ross in 1814. It ground grain into flour for bread to feed both Settlement Ross and the Russians' Alaskan settlements. Although the original structure no longer exists, historical records preserve many images and references to the Russian-style windmill. A stolbovka style replica at Fort Ross, implemented by the Link of Times Foundation and donated to California State Parks for the 200th anniversary of Fort Ross's founding, follows the original in featuring authentic mechanisms, a nail-free roof structure made of birch bark, and two pairs of blade wings. Russian masters used traditional early 19th-century windmill-building techniques and period tools such as an ax, planer, scraper, and adzes to construct the mill in Russia and ship it to Fort Ross for installation. During his 1822 visit, Fr. Mariano Payers wrote, "To the north of the square at a distance of three musket shots, they have a good windmill that grinds perfectly, all of it being made of wood from its foundation up."
