J. A. Skinner State Park spans parts of Hadley and South Hadley in the Connecticut River Valley and surrounds Mount Holyoke, whose summit became a popular scenic destination in the mid-19th century. Its best-known landmark, the Prospect House, opened in 1851 and grew into a major excursion hotel reached by steamer and tramway. After damage from the Great Hurricane of 1938, Joseph Allen Skinner helped secure the property as a state park dedicated in 1940. Though later threatened by neglect and possible demolition, the surviving summit house was preserved, restored, and reopened for tours. The park remains known for sweeping views, recreation, and extensive trails.
