The first Melber school building stood on this site in 1897. It became Melber Jr. H. S. in 1903. The building burned on Oct. 1, 1929, and a new brick building opened Aug. 25, 1930. Between 1937 and 1954, Melber served grades 1-12, and between 1954 and 1963 it served elementary grades. Melber Elementary School consolidated with Lowes High School in 1963. Early Kentucky school districts were very small, and that system was abolished in 1908 in favor of a county school system. After the 1920s, consolidation became common in Kentucky as changes in agriculture and out-migration contributed. Pupils from outlying districts were transported to Melber and Lowes, and by 1930 state standards for teachers began and the school year increased to 7 months.
