Gen. Hylan B. Lyon's Cavalry Brigade ferried here during the raid through West Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, and North Alabama, using the steamer Ben South, captured by gunfire from Gracey's Battery under Lt. R.B. Matthews. They later captured the steamer Thomas E. Tutt and towboat Echo with four barges, a lt. col., and 49 other prisoners. The vessels were burned and sunk in the channel off this point.
