Straits State Park on the north shore of the Straits of Mackinac at St. Ignace grew from a small 1924 day-use park into a large campground shaped by modern transportation. Expanded in the 1940s and 1950s for motorists and travel trailers arriving by car ferry, it was then divided by the construction of the Mackinac Bridge approaches. Further changes in the 1970s added more campsites, updated facilities, overlooks, and trails, while the Father Marquette National Memorial opened there in 1980. Later renovations modernized the campground. The park remains notable for its bridge views, camping, and direct connection to the region’s transportation history.
