Anne R. Conover is remembered for her contributions to preserving Connecticut’s tidal wetlands and for her vision in protecting 200 acres of tidal wetlands that today form the core of the Guilford Salt Meadows Sanctuary, two landmarks in wetlands conservation history. In 1933, Anne and Woolsey Conover purchased this property, formerly the Dudley Farm and then the Cornell Farm. During their 58-year tenure in the valley of Clapboard Hill, Anne Conover helped prevent the pristine East River and its salt meadows from being spoiled by rallying her neighbors to donate their salt meadow parcels to create a National Audubon Society sanctuary, with her own donation coming first. She also rallied the state to enact tidal wetlands legislation, culminating in The Tidal Wetlands Act of 1969, which helped preserve one of Connecticut’s most irreplaceable natural resources.
