At Bayougoula Village in 1713, Canadians and French settled the area, followed later by Germans, Acadians, and Spaniards. In 1730 Governor Perier organized an expedition here against the Natchez Indians. The area was also an early center of cattle raising, and French records referred to it as Tabiscana.
