Florida's third steam railroad began operations in May 1839, built to transport cotton from Iola at Tennessee Bluff on the Apalachicola River to the city of St. Joseph 28 miles away. The line had a five-foot gauge, and Baldwin locomotives pulled flat cars loaded with bales of cotton from Alabama and Georgia. The demise of the city of St. Joseph in 1841 and poor financial conditions brought the railroad to an end.
